Finding the Lord in Our Rest

“Our salvation, our hope, what is going to restore us is not us going faster, trying harder, or making anything better, but in returning and rest. I think of this particularly when I’m about to go away on my annual vacation—I think of it as a season of returning and rest. It’s coming home, it’s creating space, and ultimately finding the Lord in the middle of that.”
As Bishop Alex embarks on his annual month of rest, he takes inspiration from Isaiah 30 and encourages us to use the rhythm of our lives to reencounter God.

Love that Transcends Difference

“There are theological differences within the College of Bishops and yet, because we have a foundational belief and faith and trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and in the Scriptures as containing all things necessary for salvation, there is a unity that brings us together and brings us to the table. And indeed the Lord‘s command that we love one another—Jesus didn’t say, ‘You must agree with one another,’ but he did say, ‘You must love one another’—that command is something that we are trying hard to live out.”
We checked in with Bishop Alex earlier this week during the ACNA College of Bishops meeting in Ambridge, PA. He shared an “object lesson” he gleaned from participating in this group of leaders—and reflected on its relevance for our local congregations.

The Mystery of the Trinity

“There is something about God—his Trinitarian nature, whom we worship in unity—that is fundamentally a mystery which we cannot entirely understand. And frankly, that’s what makes him God. There is something about him that we can articulate, but not entirely understand.”
As we approach Trinity Sunday in the church calendar, Bishop Alex reflects on some of the images that Christians have used through the ages to try to explain the concept of the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He also explains why all of these attempts to understand the Trinity through a worldly lens have failed.
What Is Pentecost?

“Pentecost really is about the holy presence of God himself, upon and in and through his church. I often think about this—we as Christians believe in a supernatural God and the day of Pentecost is a reminder that the supernatural God comes and dwells among us.”
As we approach Pentecost Sunday, Bishop Alex recalls his first exposure to Pentecost and his realization that, “This seems like a pretty significant event.”

What Is Ascension Day?

“There are so many things that we could fix our attention on, things that will drag us down and bring us to a place of despair or doubt or concern. But the invitation of Ascension is to make some effort to pay attention to the better things.”
Inspired by the collect that we pray on Ascension Day, as well as the lectionary reading from Paul’s letter to the Philippians, Bishop Alex encourages us to look forward to this upcoming church season of Ascension, Pentecost, and Trinity, and dwell for a moment on the image of Christ ascending to glory.
